PM, IUCN Director discuss environmental issues

AMMONNEWS - The Prime Minister, Abdullah Ensour, and the General Director of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) , Inger Andersen, on Tuesday discussed key projects the Kingdom will carry out to preserve the environment.
The Premier cited such ventures as the Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance Project, which will contribute towards providing drinking water and transferring salt water as a result of desalination to the Dead Sea, thus maintaining the water level in the Dead Sea.
The water level of the Dead Sea had been dropping at an alarming pace, seriously threatening its existence because of evaporation and other factors.
Ensour and Andersen agreed on the need to support "this important project" to preserve the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, as a world heritage site.
Andersen praised the passage of legislation on environmental preservation, citing the rehabilitation of the Zarqa River Basin to address its environmental hazards.
